Rolls-Royce Apparition by Jeremy Westerlund

Youve seen the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Youve seen the Rolls-Royce Ghost. Now say hello to the Rolls-Royce Apparition. Unlike its production counterparts, the Apparition is purely a design study. Its the brainchild of one Jeremy Westerlund, who designed it as an independent project while studying at the Art Center. The idea blends classic design elements with futuristic ones, with mahogany wheel inserts and a shape that places the chauffeur out in the open like in vintage motor carriages, with the occupants coddled inside. Although just a design for the time being, the model itself is nearly six feet long, and in reality would measure over 23 feet long, or four feet longer than the Phantom saloon.

2011 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid

The 918 Spyder is powered by both a 500-horsepower V8 and a pair of electric motors (one for each axle) producing an additional 218 hp or 160kW. At full gallop, the concept can theoretically reach 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and nip 198 mph on the high end. On the flip side, Porsche says it can also achieve 78 miles per gallon and emit just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

How does a supercar have such range? Well, the 918 Spyder concept is a parallel hybrid just like your mom's Prius (well not just like). That means the two powertrains, gas and electric, can operate together or separately to motivate the wheels into motion. There are no less than four modes that configure the powertrains for a
nything from maximum efficiency to maximum performance and everything in between. The E-Drive mode means pure electric power, and the car can reportedly last up to 16 miles on electrons alone. Next up is Hybrid mode, which is just what it sounds like and would probably be the mode for everyday around town driving. The Sport Hybrid mode again uses both powertrains, but tips the needle a bit more towards performance with most power reaching the rear wheels. Finally, the Race Hybrid mode means all systems are go for the lowest lap times possible (Porsche says it can do the Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes). There's an even a push-to-pass button (if only it were that easy) that adds a bit of E-boost on the straights and, of course, regenerative braking is present and accounted for.

What was once a concept is getting ready to be put on the market... Porsche AG may price the 918 Spyder, at 500,000 euros ($630,000), topping the Carrera GT as its costliest model.

Audi V10

First unveiled with a V8 engine, Audi waited a while before introducing the V10 model. But when the convertible Spyder version came along, they did things the other way around, offering it at first only with the V10. Now the German automaker has opened the order books for customers who want the open-air experience of the Spyder with the more economic V8 engine. Customers who opt for the V8 model can still choose from manual or automatic transmissions, available carbon-ceramic brakes and can upgrade to the V10 versions larger wheels and upgraded suspension. So if youve been hankering for an R8 Spyder but the V10 has been a little out of reach, now could be your time.

Presenting the new Bugatti Veyron Super Sports: the World’s Fastest Car

For the long-anticipated Veyron Super Sports which follows in the tire tracks of upgraded Super Sports models from the marque’s history Bugatti has tweaked the engine to produce an extra 200 horsepower over the standard models 1000. The resulting 1200-horse output, combined with revised aerodynamics, was enough for Bugatti to claim the land speed record at 267.81 miles per hour, achieved at parent company Volkswagens proprietary Ehra-Lessian test track in the presence of officials from the Guiness Book of World Records and the German Technical Inspection Agency, making it official.

The Veyron Super Sports will be unveiled officially next month at the Pebble Beach Concours dElegance, after which full details of customer availability will be announced. For now we know that the first five production models will be painted the same black and neon orange paint scheme as the test vehicle you see here.
